This book was IT.It fed my intellect and nourished my mind.Carl Jung is a Father on my intellectual journey. I go back to consult him when I feel pathless. And he never disappoints. He is patient, knowing (real knowing- not a fake), mythical, and scientific. I was expecting an autobiography, but this book is not really that. Jung writes (and I’m paraphrasing and vastly oversimplifying) that we all have an outer life of events and an inner life of thoughts, dreams, and feelings. He felt that the outer events were only important when they coincided with his inner life. He had no desire to recall past events because they no longer interested him, but his inner life became more colorful and detailed with refection. This book is about the development of this inner life.Of course, I was hoping to find out about what prompted the break with Freud, but I didn’t really get any details. It seems that their thinking simply diverged. Freud went one way and Jung went another. To Freud, Jung was a heretic! And it’s easy to see Freud’s point. Where Jung went is difficult to follow. For example, what is instinct? How much of what we know IS instinct? Where does instinct come from? Are there universal symbols that everyone has an innate knowledge of? And how does one prove “synchronicity”? I wish he had gone into astrology here, but he did not. (I’ve ordered JUNG ON ASTROLOGY to see what he thought of it.) Jung didn’t scoff at the possibility of ghosts or the supernatural either.This is an offbeat work that I found very stimulating on a lot of levels. It probably raises more questions than it answers. It’s hard to rate something like this, but I’ll give it five stars for uniqueness.
